The dotnet documentation gets hints about using GitHub Copilot. Is this an ad? And can we expect more in the future?
The target page in question: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/standard/serialization/system-text-json/customize-properties#use-github-copilot-to-customize-property-names-and-order
And also this one: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/core/testing/unit-testing-with-copilot
As far as I can tell these are the only two occurrences (if I can use Google properly).
Is this advertisement?
If you follow the GitHub issue you can see that many folks are a bit annoyed by that move. And I don't blame them. The dotnet foundation, under which the repository (and dotnet itself), is hosted, states this as their slogan:
The .NET Foundation is an independent, non-profit organization established to support an innovative, commercially friendly, open-source ecosystem around the .NET platform. Read More
The question it raises: How independent is it, if you make a promotion for a 3rd party tool. Sure you can make the claim it is free, but that shouldn't really matter. Mainly, because it isn't (well you might pay at least with your data and privacy/code) and then it begs question, why not promoting other tools (if you want to be independent, then to some degree you have to give more context).
Can we expect more in the future?
I think we can expect more of this in the future. Microsoft is heavily investing in AI and it seems like they are trying to push it into every product they have. It seems even your good old Notepad has now Copilot support.
